YES! VIBRATORS CAN CAUSE NUMBNESS

Being in the field of sexology for over 17 years has given me the opportunity to witness and listen to the lived, embodied experiences of multitudes of women and people with Vulvas from around the globe. Hands down, without exception, almost every single woman has reported changes in or loss of clitoral sensitivity as a result of regular, consistent use of a clitoral vibrator.

Contrary to what sex toy companies try to tell and sell you, recent studies suggest that frequent use of vibrators may lead to reduced clitoral sensitivity, a phenomenon linked to overstimulation of nerve endings. Western-based research has shown that over time, increased reliance on high-intensity vibrations can diminish tactile response, underscoring the need for caution and conscious use. The good news is that Western studies, as well as lived experience, indicate that clitoral sensitivity can be regained by cultivating a more embodied, tactile approach to sexual stimulation. For example, Holistic and Sacred sexuality practices, which involve breathing exercises, mindful touch, and focused meditation, help you reconnect with and enhance your body’s natural responses. Within weeks, students report significant improvements in their sensitivity, a deeper connection to their bodies, and a more fulfilling intimate experience.

In this 2025 Tantra Talks Throwback, Devi and Tugce dive into the truth about vibrators, desensitization, and the not-so-subtle gaslighting happening in the pleasure product industry.

This episode is not to shame you (or anyone) about vibrator use. The purpose is to educate you about the long-term impacts on your body and validate your lived experiences.

In this episode, Devi and Tugce explore how Tibetan 5 Element Tantra and Holistic Sexology methods can help reawaken your nervous system, restore your sensation, and support your healing, without shame, and without outsourcing your pleasure to plastic.

In this episode, we discuss:
  • The stone-cold reality that vibrators can desensitize the clitoral nerve endings over time
  • Why “needing stronger settings” is a red flag, not a flex
  • The link between vibrator use and emotional dissociation
  • How vibrators can mimic the impact of p🌐rn on the nervous system
  • Why the sex toy industry is gaslighting women (and who’s profiting)
  • What your downward voiding winds are—and why electronics can disturb them
  • How vibrators were invented (hint: lazy doctors + hysterical housewives 😬)
  • What to do if you feel dependent on vibrators and how to reclaim your sensitivity!

Many of us will sometimes turn to vibrators to shortcut intimacy with ourselves, especially when we’re exhausted, emotionally shut down, or disconnected in our relationships. But when you start losing sensation, grinding for release, and reaching for level 10 buzz just to feel something… It’s time to pay attention.

The sex toy industry often promotes the narrative that high-intensity vibrators enhance pleasure without any consequences. By promoting ever-stronger products and presenting them as essential for sexual satisfaction, the industry profits not only from continuous sales but also from perpetuating misinformation. This keeps us reliant on their products, which is kind of the goal, right?

Sovereign sexual beings that wholly trust the messages and responses of their bodies are not as susceptible to manipulative marketing methods.

Long story short, we’re not saying NOT to use your vibrator. We’re saying: use it with intention, not to override your body, but to deepen your connection to it.

As with everything sexual and somatic, your body isn’t broken—we just need to understand the language that it speaks!
