The Motherwound is a core wound related to nurturing, or the lack thereof. Modern psychology recognizes that insufficient nurturing has severe, often long-lasting, and sometimes irreversible effects on a child’s development.
In fact, research indicates a strong, positive relationship between lack of nurturing (emotional neglect), abuse, and an increased risk of violent behavior in adulthood. The National Institute of Justice states that “Childhood maltreatment, including neglect and harsh physical punishment, is linked to higher rates of intimate partner violence, criminal involvement, and difficulty managing aggression.”
When I observe the emotional, relational, and physical violence that consumes most modern societies today, and connect that to the violence and devastation that is happening to our planet, positioned against the backdrop of thousands and thousands of years of hatred and violence towards women, (particulary dark-skinned women, who embody the form of the original Mother of all human life) – How can the current state of Global affairs be anything other than one big, giant, festering, millenia old Motherwound?
In short, I believe that the hatred and violence many societies and cultures perpetuate and condone towards women is reflective of a deep, underlying, unprocessed Motherwound on a global scale.
The Motherwound is a relational wound. Nurturing is the medicine to heal relational wounding. There are times when we must seek the nurturing that we require within our own hearts. We must become our own internal “Mother”, protecting and tending to the tender places within ourselves with maturity, patience, and grace.
In Episode 1 of Season 2 Sex Is Medicine Reboot, The Adoptedsexologist, Anna Linde, and I discuss tending and mending the Motherwound within each of us, how it shows up in intimate relationships, and how to use embodied pleasure to nurture our hearts and awaken the wisdom of the body.
